Jim Sherwood

For scc board of governors district 3

WHY I’M RUNNING

I strongly believe in the power of post-secondary education, whether for the development of skill sets, or for knowledge to enhance one’s quality of life. Southeast Community College delivers on both counts. It is one of the most outstanding community colleges in the country, and I’m working to help it grow even stronger.

I am privileged to be a member of the SCC Board of Governors, serving also as Secretary of the Board, and member of the SCC Executive Advisory Team, which has authorized major construction projects on all three campuses of the college.

During my tenure the college has received outstanding evaluations from its accrediting body, the Higher Learning Commission.   Literally dozens of new programs have been approved during my tenure, and new Learning Centers have been opened. In fact, no resident of the College’s fifteen-county service area is now more than 35 miles from an SCC campus or Learning Center.

MUCH HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED, BUT MUCH REMAINS TO BE DONE

professional experience

This election should be about experience and skill sets which will further the goals and mission of Southeast Community College, and I'm confident I have that experience. Over the course of a 40-year career in higher education, I have served as a Faculty Member, Dean, Provost, and Community College CEO.

I often joke that my mother brought me to kindergarten when I was five-years old and I haven't been out of school since.

fun fact

I was the author of “Nebraska Football: The Coaches, the Players, the Experience”, published in 1987.

After interviewing Bob Devaney, Tom Osborne, and more than 250 former players and coaches, I learned much about leadership, perseverance, and accomplishment. These lessons greatly shaped my thinking about how to achieve ambitious goals.

Kiwanis pancake
I'm even willing to wear a paper hat at the annual Kiwanis pancake feed if it means raising money for the community.

community service

I have always believed in giving back to the community. Some of my many involvements have included:

  • Lincoln Center Kiwanis – served as President
  • Kiwanis Foundation of Lincoln Center – served as President
  • Lincoln City Library Board of Trustees – served as President
  • Lincoln Children’s Zoo – Board member
  • Nebraska Humanities Council – invited speaker

I would greatly appreciate your support in 2024
